Anterior Ankle Impingement

Sub-4 Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Clinic in Staffordshire, West Midlands

Anterior Ankle Impingement

Anterior Ankle Impingement is commonly caused by a bone spur on the anklebone (talus) or the shinbone (tibia). Repeated kicking and running actions can cause the anklebone to hit the bottom of the shinbone, which can lead to a lump of bone (or bone spur) developing.

The bone spur can then begin to impact on the soft tissue at the front of your ankle, causing inflammation and swelling. The condition is very common in athletes who repeatedly bend the ankle upward (dorsiflexion), such as footballers and rugby players. This could be the cause of you ankle pain and need to be assessed.

This is why it’s important you to get your assessed by a Musculoskeletal Podiatrist.
